About the Artist

Sarah Sohraby - Biography

Born and raised on the picturesque French Riviera, Sarah grew up surrounded by the vibrant colors of the sea, sky, and landscapes that profoundly influenced her childhood. She obtained a medical degree in Belgium. As a physician, patient care instilled a deep appreciation for the intricacies of the human body. To understand better the science underlying medicine, she pursued a Ph.D. in physiology, delving into laboratory research that combined precision, creativity, and discovery.  Sarah thoroughly delighted in teaching and mentoring medical students in Belgium, the USA, and the Republic of Congo.  Upon meeting professional artist, Cathy Grawin in 2015, Sarah was inspired to try painting and with Cathy as a mentor, her artistic journey began.

As a woman who bridges the worlds of medicine, science, and art, I found my most striking artistic inspiration in the narratives etched into the walls of ancient caves thousands of years old.  So much was said without a word.  These primordial drawings on rugged surfaces have immense power because they were created by humans who wanted to understand and communicate their place in the universe.  For me, they are a powerful reminder that humanity and art cannot be separated.  Those masterpieces have taught me to value the beauty of texture and rich backgrounds, the simple lines, the stylized drawing, and they have shaped my artistic style.
As a medical doctor, I saw pain and hope, felt sometimes wonderful and often useless. As a scientist, I sought to bring answers to questions mostly too big, and I learned to be humble while facing the unknown.  Now, I want to paint all these feelings with the universal language of art.
